O pica-pau-dourado-escuro é uma ave da ordem Piciformes da família Picidae. Atualmente, o complexo Piculus chrysochloros compreende nove subespécies de difícil distinção. O que se sabe é que a variação individual é muito grande, e que esta espécie vive nas mais variadas ecorregiões, habitando florestas úmidas, cerrado e caatinga.

The dark-gold woodpecker is a bird of the order Piciformes of the Picidae family. Currently, the complex Piculus chrysochloros comprises nine subspecies of difficult distinction. What is known is that the individual variation is very large, and that this species lives in the most varied ecoregions, inhabiting humid, cerrado and caatinga forests.

Nome Científico

Seu nome científico significa: do (latim) piculos = diminutivo de picus = Pequeno pica-pau; e do (grego) khrusos = dourado; e khlöros = verde. ⇒ Pequeno pica-pau dourado e verde.

Scientific name: Its scientific name means: (Latin) piculos = diminutive of picus = Little woodpecker; and (Greek) khrusos = golden; and khlöros = green. ⇒ Small golden and green woodpecker. 

Características

Machos e fêmeas apresentam coloração verde-olivácea no dorso, e amarela barrada em marrom-oliva no ventre. Em geral, os machos apresentam a plumagem da cabeça vermelha, enquanto as fêmeas, dependendo da subespécie, podem apresentar cabeça verde-oliva (tal qual o dorso) ou amarela. Indivíduos dos dois gêneros apresentam uma faixa amarela que vai do loro até a nuca, mas apenas nos machos observa-se estria malar vermelha. A íris pode ser branca ou azul, o bico é cinza escuro e as pernas são coloridas de oliva.

Characteristics: Males and females present olive green color on the back, and yellow barred olive brown in the womb. In general, males exhibit red head plumage, while females, depending on the subspecies, may have an olive green head (such as back) or yellow. Individuals of both genders present a yellow stripe that runs from the parrot to the nape of the neck, but only in males is observed a red malar streak. The iris can be white or blue, the beak is dark gray and the legs are olive colored. 

Alimentação

Em geral, Piculus chrysochloros alimenta-se de cupins e larvas que vivem em galerias na casca das árvores. Tais pica-paus apresentam uma extensa língua, serrilhada e bastante adaptada aos hábitos sondadores.

Reprodução

Sabe-se que Piculus chrysochloros nidifica em cavidades, colocando ovos claros. Quanto ao período reprodutivo, as informações divergem conforme as diferentes localidades, sendo que há registros de reprodução de março à agosto.
